B. México City. Self-taught artist who taught at Philadelphia Museum School (1957); has illustrated several books. Influenced by *Goya, Cuevas draws his themes from the dregs of society, emphasizing its sickness and cruelty through *Expressionist, grotesque, distorted images rendered in thin washes of colour and powerful, yet often delicate, draughtsmanship.
